Becoming the first British solo artist to have over one billion streams on Spotify, Calvin Harris has made music history during his current wave of success.

The number makes the equivalent of playing his tunes non-stop for over 5,000 continuous years, and can be broken down as the equivalent to three steams for every American man, woman and child.

“We would like to congratulate Calvin Harris on reaching the huge milestone of a billion streams on Spotify, conclusive proof if any were needed that he is one of the most popular artists on Spotify.” said Steve Savoca, Spitfy's VP of Content and Distribution.

Celebrating the landmark achievement tonight, Calvin will be hosting a Spotify Playlist Takeover at 8pm.

Fans can listen live as Calvin introduces a playlist of his favourite tracks on Todays Top Hits.

This line of work is a far cry from the days Calvin would be stacking shelves with such a career seeming out of reach. Now knowing that this is all behind him, he played to a packed out Roundhouse in London on Sunday as part of the iTunes Festival.

Fighting for every scrap of success possible and putting aside all the tabloid antics we hear time and time again, he's certainly a British act we should be proud of and can all get behind.

Now nominated for Best UK & Ireland Act at the MTV EMAs he continues to make a name for himself all over the globe.

Without people like Calvin Harris, there would be no music. Calvin, we salute you.
