Arctic Monkeys thrilled fans at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Britain by playing a surprise set to open the festival.

Organisers had promised the two-day event in Carlisle, England would be kicked off by "special guests" and the crowds cheered as frontman Alex Turner and his bandmates took the stage on Saturday (14May11).

Arctic Monkeys showcased their hits as well as tracks from their forthcoming album, Suck It And See, during their unadvertised 45-minute set.

Meanwhile, the Foo Fighters became the only band to have ever headlined the festival twice as they closed the main stage proceedings on day one with an 80-minute greatest hits set.

Speaking from the stage, singer Dave Grohl joked, "We've got a hundred songs, we've been going for 16 years and we've only got an hour."

The Black Eyed Peas, British singers Jessie J and Ellie Goulding, as well as London rapper Tinie Tempah all performed at the massive concert, with over 20,000 fans in attendance. Lady Gaga topped the bill on Sunday (15May11).
