Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong has admitted that he once stole US chat show host David Letterman's Limo in a moment of madness

The Californian punk star admits he went a little crazy when he first arrived in New York in 2003 at the age of 31 and did a lot of things he now regrets.

The band went to New York to record their unreleased studio album Cigarettes and Valentines and ended up with their finished product newly entitled American Idiot which brought them great success.

He tells Details magazine, "I had a tendency in my past to get caught up in partying too much or making bad decisions. Stealing a limo from David Letterman during the Insomniac tour...  I got into a little bit of trouble."

In the end Armstrong received a reality check when he was pulled over in 2003 for drink driving with an alcohol limit, more than twice over the legal amount.

But the wild ways helped him to create the character Johnny for his 21st Century Breakdown concept album and Broadway musical, the musical, set to finish later this year from loss of ticket sales is set to be made into a film, with Universal hopeful to pick up the movie rights.
