Johnny Marr with the Cribs

Johnny Marr, former The Smiths star, has left The Cribs to focus on his solo project.

The musician has been involved with the group since 2008, but he announced on Monday that he was parting ways with the sibling trio, Gary, Ryan and Ross Jarman.

In a statement, he says, "I'm working on new solo songs. I'll be putting out two records over the next year or so and doing more film soundtrack work.

"Touring and recording with Ryan, Gary and Ross has been fantastic and Ignore The Ignorant is something I'm really proud of. We ended up doing much more than we originally set out to and I've made three good friends."

Last month, Marr announced he is to release two solo albums before the end of 2012 - his first records under his own name since 2003's Boomslang - in addition to writing his autobiography.

Marr has made it a habit to briefly join bands he enjoys playing with - he has also been a member of Modest Mouse and The The. He has also served as session guitarist for The Pretenders and Black Grape, among others.
