Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel has pulled out of his much anticipated Oscar performance - because awards show bosses wouldn’t let him perform the complete version of his Wall-E song.

The rock legend thought he would get the chance to sing Down To Earth, the song he composed with Thomas Newman, and when he realised he'd only have time to perform an edited version, he withdrew from the Academy Awards.

Keen not to let the stage go unattended, the award big wigs have replaced his set with one from the Soweto Gospel Choir, according to Daily Variety.

In a video on his website, Gabriel says, "It's a bit unfortunate. The songwriters are a very small part of the filmmaking process but we still work bloody hard.

He admits he still intends to attend the Oscars on 22 February. Not quite sure how good an idea that might be though…
