Sir Paul McCartney is furious U.K. taxpayers bailed out struggling British banks only to see staff awarded huge bonuses, and he's demanding finance bosses pay back the cash.

The Beatles legend is adamant the controversial Occupy Wall Street anti-capitalism protests are justified as outrage grows over the global banking crisis.

And he insists bosses of leading finance institutions should hand back money from the £500 billion U.K. government rescue package which was put together following the run on British bank Northern Rock in 2007.

McCartney tells The Times: "When the banks go bust and we bail them out - OK, I can see that. But here's the bit I feel is missing - they didn't pay us back. I think everyone is like, 'Wait a minute - did I miss something?'

"I am with all those people (in the 'Occupy' movement) in that respect. Pay it back."
