Sophie Ellis Bextor has given birth to her second child nine weeks early.

The singer was forced to have an emergency caesarean after being diagnosed with the potentially life-threatening condition pre-eclampsia.

Ellis-Bextor, who is married to The Feeling bassist Richard Jones, gave birth to a 2lb 10oz baby boy - called Kit Valentine - on Saturday although he wasn't due until April.

Sophie's agent, Sundraj Srinivasan, today issued a statement on behalf of the couple. He said: "Sophie Ellis Bextor and Richard Jones welcomed the latest addition to their family on Saturday February 7th. The happy couple have named their boy Kit Valentine Jones. Both mother and baby are doing well."

It is the second time Sophie has been struck down with the condition after she had an emergency caesarean at 28 weeks while carrying her first child, Sonny, who is now four-years-old.

He spent five weeks in hospital before being allowed home but then developed meningitis at four months and had to be readmitted and made a full recovery.

Just before she gave birth to Valentine, Sophie wrote in her blog: "We are all really excited about meeting the new addition to our family. Sonny has always loved babies and has been telling me for a while he would like a baby brother or sister so for him it's what he expected would happen at some point.
