George Michael was always ‘puzzled’ by the popularity one of his greatest hits, ‘Careless Whisper’ saw throughout the late musician’s career.

Since news of the icon’s death broke, people have been searching the archives to celebrate his life and work, and an interview from 2009 sees Michael speaking to The Big Issue.

He said: “I’m still a bit puzzled why it’s made such an impression on people. Is it because so many people have cheated on their partners? Is that why they connect with it? I have no idea, but it’s ironic that this song – which has come to define me in some way – should have been written right at the beginning of my career when I was still so young.”

At the time, he added: “I was only 17 and didn’t really know much about anything – and certainly nothing much about relationships.”

George Michael passed away on Christmas Day, 2016 (December 25) aged 53 of suspected heart failure.
