Ricky Martin returned to his native Puerto Rico on Monday to urge government officials to combat the growing problem of human trafficking in the Caribbean territory.

The Livin' La Vida Loca star presented a study undertaken by his Ricky Martin Foundation - a charity for children's rights - at the University of Puerto Rico. He explained the country has become a hub for those involved in the illegal sex, imprisonment and kidnapping trade.

He told assembled committee members, "This is happening on our island. We cannot turn our back on the victims."

Luis Cdebaca, director of the U.S. State Department's division of human-trafficking monitoring, thanked the singer for his efforts to highlight the problem.
