Beyonce

When Beyoncé first announced that she and Jay-Z were expecting a child, in spectacular fashion at the 2011 Video Music Awards, the one question on everyone's lips was most definitely 'what will it be called?!'

Unless you have somehow managed to avoid the mass-coverage coming at you from every angle, you will know that she gave birth to a girl over the weekend. And the name?

First reported as Ivy Blue, but since suggested by best friend, Gwyneth Paltrow, to be Blue Ivy. Keen fans of the singer will know that her favourite number is four (a significant date in her relationship with the rapper, Jay-Z, and also the title of her latest album), and it is thought to be no coincidence that the roman numerals I and V added together make four, can be taken from the name Ivy.

The baby was never going to be called something average, especially as there is an ongoing trend amongst celebrities to come up with the most weird and wonderful names.

Perhaps Beyoncé took inspiration from Gwyneth, who has two children with Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin, and caused a stir when they named their first born, 'Apple', who was then followed by Moses.

Last year, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon welcomed twins into the world, naming them Moroccan, and Monroe. And the Beckhams added to their ever growing brood, this time with a girl, Harper Seven.

So will this trend spread to all new mothers? According to the most popular names for new babies in 2011, the traditional names are still favoured over anything too 'imaginative':

The top names for boys:
1. Oliver
2. Jack
3. Harry
4. Charlie
5. James

And for girls:
1.Lily
2.Emily
3.Isabella
4.Sophia
5.Isabelle

Among those expecting in 2012 are former X Factor star, Stacey Soloman, and one fifth of The Saturdays, Una Healey. Across the pond, reality star, Kourtney Kardashian, and Jessica Simpson are also pregnant, so there are sure to be some interesting names amongst them.

Already leading the way with name trends for 2012 is Lily Allen, who, despite giving birth towards the end of 2011, has only recently confirmed her baby girl's name as Ethel Mary. These old fashioned names are set make a comeback, along with unisex names, and those taken from popular culture.
