Kitchen aprons, oven gloves, unwanted exercise DVDs, cuddly toys, rubber gloves and ill-fitting clothing were all given the thumbs down by fed up mums.

The poll by money saving website Promotionalcodes.org.uk asked 1,000 mums to name the most disappointing Mother’s day presents they have ever received.

All the mums were then asked to name the gift they would be most upset to receive on March 10 with diet pills picking up almost a fifth of votes to be named as the ultimate gifting no-no.

One mum who took part commented: “When my teenage son handed me a bottle of diet pills last Mother’s Day I hit the roof. I think it was his idea of a joke but needless to say I didn’t find it in the least funny.”

In second place was cleaning products, with 18 per cent, followed by plastic flowers with 15 per cent, and kitchen aprons and oven gloves taking fourth place with 14 per cent of the vote.

Bargain basement cooking books were voted in as the fifth most unappealing Mother’s day gift, scoring 12 per cent.

Unwanted exercise DVDs came next with five per cent of votes, followed by cuddly toys, rubber gloves and ill-fitting clothing all with three per cent each.

Another mum said: “Last year I received an exercise DVD from my children. I knew I had put on a tiny bit of weight but that was just cheeky. I took it straight back and brought myself some rather delicious chocolates with the money.”

However, all the top five gifts were viewed as worse than getting nothing at all, with no gift coming sixth in the poll scoring eight per cent of votes.

Pollsters were told by another respondent: “I hate plastic flowers with a passion and so to receive a collection of plastic flowers from my husband was a nightmare. I may have left them out for a few days but after that they went straight in the bin.”

A spokesperson for Promotionalcodes.org.uk said: “With the exception of their birthdays, this really is the only time most of us will pamper our mothers. So to think about a Mother’s Day gift at the last minute really isn’t acceptable.

“It is important to plan ahead when searching for the ideal present for our mums. Personally I would suggest gifts such as a lavish meal at a restaurant or a day of pampering in order to make our mothers feel special. Certainly not plastic flowers or oven gloves.”
