Naturally, we will look for clues and the biggest clue lies in the ring finger, hence why the majority of single Brits will check for a ring before making a move on someone.

Three quarters of Brits admitted to looking for a wedding ring when they meet someone on a night out, with 62 per cent saying they do so in the first 20 seconds.

Four in ten also admitted that they will look for a wedding ring even before they start talking to someone!

Women were more likely than men to look for a ring, with 81 per cent of women saying they would try and peek compared to just 70 per cent of men.

It seems to be the older generations that are more concerned with 35-50 being the prime age bracket.

This isn’t the only tactics that Brits will employ, with 69 per cent admitting that they will also ask leading questions to determine if who they are talking to is single.

The most common ways were asking about plans for the weekend, who they’re out with, their living arrangements and even holiday plans.

If it turns out that the person is taken, Match.com found that 45 per cent of people would end the conversation prematurely.

For a brave 37 per cent of people, if they are having a hard time telling if a person is single, they will straight up ask them!

Kate Taylor, resident relationship expert at match.com, said, “Many of us tend to shy away from asking someone outright whether they are single or not.

“Looking for love online does a lot of the hard work for you, as you can discover someone’s relationship status instantly.

“Match.com nights does the same thing, taking the pressure off singles by giving them more ways to get in touch with potential dates: there’s plenty of other singles to get to know, and after meeting they can contact one another through the site.”

Karl Gregory, MD UK & Ireland, match.com, adds, “Our job is to give people the best possible chance of meeting someone they might not otherwise meet, whether that’s by getting to know one another through our site or by meeting at one of our match.com organised nights.”
