Will you be having a Christmas fling?

Will you be having a Christmas fling?

Christmas is a time for family and friends, filled with love and festive spirit, getting together with relatives to enjoy the Christmas period. But that is not what these students have got planned...

A new study taken by a controversial dating site in the UK, www.ShagAtUni.com has revealed that one fifth of students are actually planning to cheat on their Uni partners this Christmas as they return home to spend time with family and friends. Over half of those surveyed admitted that they would be most likely to cheat with an ex-lover!

The study carried out by website www.ShagAtUni.com recently caused some controversy by crowning 20-year-old Exeter university student Elina Desaine as the “UK’s Horniest Student”. Researchers polled a total of 2,748 university students, all of whom were in a relationship with a partner they had met whilst at Uni. Those taking part were asked a series of questions regarding their Christmas holiday plans.

The students were first of all asked to disclose whether or not they were planning to cheat on their university boyfriend or girlfriend over the Christmas holiday break. Whilst 81% claimed that they were planning on staying completely faithful during the Christmas break at home, 19% of the students polled admitted that it was likely they would end up being unfaithful.

The 19% of students that admitted their plans to be unfaithful were then asked how they would describe their relationship with their current University partner, with 42% describing it as “casual and as-yet undefined”, 41% calling theirs “serious and monogamous” and 17% explaining it was “fun with an attractive person”.  They were then asked to predict what they believed would be the main circumstances that would lead them to cheat over the Christmas holidays, with the top five reasons emerging as follows:

1.       I might meet up with an ex and reconnect with them over Christmas for old time’s sake – (52%)

2.       I will drink too much at a Christmas/New Year’s party and forget about my partner- (46%)

3.       Life is too short to stay faithful, fun is the most important thing to me- (37%)

4.       I will feel lonely and miss my partner, and will probably cheat to cheer myself up (31%)

5.       I suspect that my partner will be cheating on me as well, so it’s only fair I do the same thing to them (24%)

Creator of Shag at Uni, Tom Thurlow, made the following comments regarding the findings of the study:

“Christmas is always going to be a tricky time for those of us in relationships, what with all those alcohol-fuelled parties, celebrations and temptations surrounding us wherever we go. It is even harder for students who may be facing up to six weeks away from their loved ones during the festive period, and could be looking for consolation and some fun in the form of an ex-lover.”

He continued:

“I like to think of it like this - if you are home for the holidays and find yourself cheating on your partner, or vice versa, then it’s obviously just not meant to be! Don’t dwell on it or spend your Christmas break feeling sad, take a trip over to ShagAtUni.com and start planning exactly how you’re going to make up for all that lost time once you return to campus a single student!”
