Alexander Skarsgard has joined Prince Harry's South Pole trek.

The 37-year-old actor is expected to race against the flame-haired royal as he will be on the US team for the Walking with the Wounded South Pole Allied Challenge, while Harry is on the British team, and Dominic West will head up a Canadian-Australian team.

He said in a statement: "I'm honoured to be working and training alongside these soldiers to raise money and awareness for this very worthy cause."

The three teams, which will feature wounded military personnel, will compete against each other as they aim to travel the 208-mile journey in November from South Africa to the South Pole.

In preparation for the gruelling challenge Harry and four members of his team will spend 24 hours in a cold chamber enduring temperatures reaching minus 40C.

During the big freeze, which they will face from September 16 to 17 in Warwickshire, south west England, they will take on several challenges, such as cooking meals, skiing for two hours, erecting and taking down their tent, while they will also be blasted with blizzard conditions.
