Britain's Prince George received a three-year-old apple tree as a gift from Labour leader Ed Miliband.

The politician and his wife Justine sent Prince William and Duchess Catherine's baby - who was born last week - the present, which came complete with fruit growing on it, to welcome him into the world, despite the couple asking for donations instead of gifts.

Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha also splashed out on a little something for the third in line to the throne by purchasing him a collection of children's books by legendary author Roald Dahl.

Cameron and Miliband decided to disclose what they had got for the prince after Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg revealed he and wife Miriam have treated the newborn baby to a blanket hand-embroidered by Spanish nuns, as well as coffee to help William and Catherine sleep.

Speaking on LBC radio, he said: "We found some beautiful, I think anyway, beautiful cover, a cot cover and a cot sheet which is hand-embroidered in a convent in the village where Miriam comes from in Spain, where I was a few days ago.

"The nuns, they make these beautiful handmade things so we've sent that and we've thrown in with a gift, a large bag of our favourite coffee because as parents of little boys, we know you need that coffee when you're coping with little boys.

"Miriam and I sent a letter with a gift just yesterday to Kensington Palace."
