Britain's Prince Philip has received birthday gifts in hospital.

The Duke of Edinburgh spent his 92nd birthday in the London Clinic today (10.06.13) after undergoing an exploratory operation on his abdomen last week but despite insisting he wanted the "minimum of fuss", well-wishers were keen to give the duke a birthday to remember by showering him in gifts.

A delivery man turned up at the hospital with a bunch of roses and balloons emblazoned with the messages "keep calm birthday boy" and "feel better", and a gun was fired twice in the capital - once in Green Park and another at the Tower of London - to mark the milestone.

Prime Minister David Cameron also took to Twitter to wish Philip a happy birthday, writing: "Wishing the Duke of Edinburgh a very happy 92nd birthday as he recovers in hospital today. (sic)"

The duke is said to be in a "comfortable" condition after going under the knife for treatment, which was carried out under general anaesthetic, and doctors are now waiting on results of the surgery, which are expected in the early part of this week, before deciding if any further treatment is required.

Last August, the duke spent five nights at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, Scotland, where he received treatment following the recurrence of a bladder infection.

But following his release from hospital he refused to cut back his schedule and returned to work shortly afterwards.
