The 65-year-old royal jetted off to Rio where the Olympic Games are being held to check out the team's training grounds in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

The news was shared on the Royal Family's social media, which saw Anne size up the Olympic swimming pool, inspect the rowing machines as well as other facilities available to the team.

The Royal Family Twitter account wrote: "The Princess Royal visits the @TeamGB Preparation Camp in Belo Horizonte #Rio2016 #BringOnTheGreat (sic)."

Anne - who is the president of the British Olympic Association (BOA) - was accompanied on her tour by Lord Sebastian Coe, who won the gold medal for Great Britain in 1980 and 1984 for his triumph in the middle distance athletics race.

Anne was introduced to the Team Great Britain athletes including marathon swimmer Kerri-Anne Payne, as well as Brazilian athletes.

The mother of two - who has daughter Zara, 35, and son Peter, 38, with her former husband Mark Phillips - continued her tour and visited the Federal University of Minas Gerias, the site of the athletics and swimming training areas.

Speaking about the royal's visit, the head of the pre-Olympic Games preparation, Paul Ford, told the Mail Online: "It was an honour to welcome Princess Anne to Belo Horizonte and the Team GB Prep Camp.

"We are hugely proud of what is the biggest and best preparation camp we have ever run, no stone has been left unturned in helping our athletes give their best performances at the Olympic Games in Rio."
