A wild boar has killed an award-winning pig on the farm of Britain's Princess Anne.

The 64-year-old royal is the owner of a farm in Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire and has confirmed the death to farmers at the Oxford Farming Conference.

She explained: "We had a visit last night on our farm from a wild boar. "My Gloucester Old Spot boar is no longer with us as a result."

The princess has kept the pigs on her farm in Gloucestershire for a number of years.

The announcement came shortly after a motorist was killed on the M4 in Wiltshire close to the royal estate after his car collided with a wild boar.

The incident is believed to be the first fatality of its kind involving a wild boar in the UK.

The animals, which were once native to Britain, can run at 30mph and climb 6ft barriers, and there are growing fears that their population could spiral out of control.

In recent weeks, there have been reports of dogs being attacked and seriously injured by the animals, while horses have also thrown their riders from the saddle on seeing the boar.
