The Royal Family have always been one to capture the attention of audiences across the world. In fact, many people visit the UK each year wanting to see where the Royals live and spend time in the same city as them. Although some people have mixed opinions on some of the members of the Royal family, in general, they are extremely popular. Any Royal event captures the attention of global audiences, but people often line the streets of London to capture a glimpse of their favourite Royals and show their support. In fact, recent research put together by Betway Insider shows that over 2 million people lined the streets when Prince Charles and Diana got married; hoping to catch sight of Diana on her way to St. Paul's Cathedral. More recently 1.9 billion people turned in to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle get married, but what is it that makes them so popular?

The Tabloids Helped

There is no denying that when it was revealed that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were stepping out romantically the tabloid newspapers gave them a hard time. Meghan didn’t come from a Royal background and instead was a popular TV actress. On top of that, she had been married before, something that they frowned up. However, the more the mainstream media gave her a hard time the more the general public warmed to her – after all, who doesn’t love an underdog?

Relatable

Although it could all be smoke and mirrors, many feel that they can relate to Harry and Meghan more than they can other members of the Royal family. We often see photos of them playing with their children, greeting members of the public and doing ‘normal’ things. Of course, their lifestyle is going to be far removed from most of our lives but the fact that they seem to be doing these things means that people feel they are a couple that they can relate to and this certainly helps their popularity.

They Have Taken Control

Many people respect the fact that they have taken as much control as possible in terms of what is said about them in the media and what information they put out there. They announced in March 2020 that they would be taking a step back from their official Instagram page, for example, thanking everyone for their support but announcing that they would be starting a new chapter. Their now infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey gave them the chance to say what they wanted to publicly, in a way that they could control and ensure they were happy with. This took the wind out of the sails of rumour mills and the media but opened them up to the public in a way that they could control how they came across. This interview helped them do this perfectly, as well as increase how relatable they seemed as a couple and whilst not everyone will have agreed on how they went about it, it is a step that would have undoubtedly increased their popularity.
