The billionaire founder of Microsoft has discussed his stance on the cryptocurrency and urged people to be cautious.

During a conversation with Andrew Sorkin on the Clubhouse social network, Gates revealed he hasn't invested in Bitcoin and prefers to put money into companies "that make products".

Earlier in the week, the software developer noted the way some of his younger peers - including Telsa CEO Elon Musk - have made money from the digital currency.

He told Bloomberg: "Elon has tons of money and he's very sophisticated, so I don't worry that his Bitcoin will sort of randomly go up or down.

"I do think people get bought into these manias, who may not have as much money to spare, so I'm not bullish on Bitcoin, and my general thought would be that, if you have less money than Elon, you should probably watch out."

Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that Tesla bought around $1.5 billion of Bitcoin in January.

Elon Musk's car company announced the acquisition and revealed that, one day, the firm expects to accept it as a form of payment.

In a stock market statement, Tesla said: "We expect to begin accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for our products in the near future, subject to applicable laws and initially on a limited basis."

The announcement prompted a dramatic spike in the price of the cryptocurrency.

Indeed, at one point, the price rose by as much as 17 percent, to reach $44,220.
