It is estimated that up to nine million women were executed during the European witch hunts which spanned three centuries. Today, many of the major places of trials and executions have taken advantage of their history and developed tourism around the events. If you fancy a witch trial trail, then here are some of the key destinations.

Despite the collapse of the European witch trials over 300 years ago, parts of Africa and Asia are still accusing and trialling suspected witches, although the punishments tend to be imprisonment rather than death.

The Channel 4 Unreported World documentary series covered the subject in its programme, Central African Republic: Witches on Trial, highlighting the shocking occurrences in the region.
