Alongside Budapest which emerged indefinitely as the best value destination for a romantic city break, both Lisbon and Prague were also identified as inexpensive places to visit.

Not far behind Milan were the traditionally romantic favourites of Amsterdam and Paris with total weekend costs of £336 and £335 respectively.

Perrin added: “Destinations like Hungary and the Czech Republic provide tourists with value for money in other areas, for example; a meal can be up to 35 per cent cheaper in Budapest when compared with the equivalent French cuisine in Paris.”

Budapest is proving popular with UK tourists as figures show that in 2011, approximately 215,000 Britons visited Hungary, up 3.4 per cent from the previous year. Over half of international tourists visiting the country chose to stay in the capital.

“With the uncertainty of the Euro, many couples nowadays are looking to be smart when they travel. We may see destinations like Budapest becoming much more attractive for weekend city breaks. Our research has shown that if you are willing to look beyond the standard destinations like Paris and Italy you can receive better value for money and make your pound stretch further,” said Perrin.

If Budapest’s picturesque castles and tranquil riverbanks are enough to entice you, then say Au Revoir to Paris and Ciao to Italy because there’s a new city on the map and it’s giving the regular romance capitals a run for their money.
