Holby City

Maddy arrives at work to find a letter sticking out of her locker. It’s from Ric explaining that she needs to do another breathalyser test.  She sees the same letter sticking out of Tom’s locker. They’ve had another crazy night and realise that they are sure to be caught this time. Maddy finds Tom, passed out in the chapel and clearly still drunk. Maddy explains to him that Ric is after them both and he needs to pull himself together.

Mark awakes from another awful night on the sofa. His flat has now turned into a boarding house and crèche. Daisha apologises for the mess but asks Mark for a favour, she would like more overtime. This comes as a surprise to Mark as she has been wanting less work not more. She explains that she needs the cash to pay for Lalaine’s airfare and while her sister is able to help out it seems to be the perfect time to get in some extra work.

Joseph has bought Faye some flowers, she loves them but she can’t help but think that Joseph is hiding something. Faye quizzes Joseph and he explains that his sister Sophia is coming to meet them both today with regards to the wedding- she would like to help. Faye doesn’t really want anyone else planning their wedding except her and Joseph.

Ric is in his office and he gets a knock on the door. He is expecting Tom, but instead he sees Ken, Tom’s father. Ken wants Ric to give Tom a second chance but Ric isn’t interested. Tom’s blown it. Ken keeps pushing and says that his son is talented and will work harder this time. Ric snaps saying that Tom nearly cost him his job. How many more chances does he have to give an ex junkie. Ric’s said too much. Ken didn’t know that Tom had a junkie past. Ken is in total shock – this is not the Tom he knows.

Faye and Joseph meet with Sophia. Joseph explains that they both want something simple but Faye doesn’t say much, sitting and listening to Sophia’s ideas. Sophia notices a name on the patient’s board - ‘Greg Peters’, a friend of hers who is also a caterer. Sophia believes this is fate and suggests that they hire Greg for their wedding.

Ken leaves Ric’s office in shock and sees Tom. Ken tells him that he knows about his heroin addiction. Tom can’t believe that Ric has told his father. Ken is furious and Tom tries to explain, but his father doesn’t even want to look at him.

Ken explains to Tom that he has decided to cut him out of his will. Tom is furious and when Ric calls him into his office he vents his anger. Tom is expecting a warning but Ric explains that he is sacking him. Ric explains that his work at Holby hasn’t matched Ric’s standards and he is being let go but Tom no longer cares and announces that he’s leaving. He never wanted to be a doctor, it was always his father’s dream, not his, he only ever did it for his inheritance. He’s saving Ric the trouble of kicking him out. He’s going.

Joseph is called to operate on Greg and Sophia seems particularly interested in him. Joseph is confused, why is she so interested in this man when he believes she only met him once? Until he finds out that Sophia is having an affair with Greg.

Tom clears out his locker. Maddy is concerned and wants to know what’s happened. Tom can’t believe what has just happened and lashes out at her.  Why would he want to hang around anyway?  So he can be an underperforming SHO at a provincial county hospital in five year’s time, doing endless ward rounds and earning terrible money? Maddy is hurt, but Tom just walks away without looking back.

Tom heads around the back of Holby, he needs time to think and be on his own. He picks up his phone and calls his dealer. He needs a fix from an old friend.

Sophia, Faye and Joseph finally sit down and discuss their wedding. Sophia thinks they should have a massive affair while Joseph thinks the opposite. Faye makes the decision to mix the big wedding plans with some of the smaller features and they all seem to agree.

Ric informs everyone that a critical patient is on his way up. The patient has had a heart attack behind the wheel of his car and is in a bad way.  In comes the patient and it’s Ken, Tom’s father. Ric acts straight away as he feels responsible.  Could the stress of the day have caused this? Ric starts operating but tells Maddy to get hold of Tom and let him know what’s going on. Tom’s phone rings - it’s Maddy. Tom cancels the call.

Lalaine calls, baby Joe won’t stop crying, Daisha explains that he will be fine and not to panic. His crying gets worse and Lalaine brings in baby Joe who has rashes all over his body. Daisha is frantic with worry that it might be meningitis. Linden takes the baby into the examining room and Daisha and Lalanie watch on as Linden treats him. It’s good news, it’s not meningitis but something less serious – an insect bite maybe. Daisha is relieved and hugs Lalaine– what will she do without her, how will she cope?

Ric is in the operating theatre but it’s not going well. He’s needs help and asks Michael to assist. Michael is pessimistic about the prognosis but Ric insists they carry on as this is Tom’s father and they owe it to him to do everything they can.

Tom is still outside and a drug dealer drops off his stash. His phone rings again and it’s Maddy. Tom buys the drugs and decides to answer. Maddy tells him about his father.  Maddy is quite clear, Tom needs to get there quickly.

Tom is watching his father on the operating table.  It’s clear that Ric and Michael are struggling as Tom stares through the glass. Ric and Michael have turned a corner and they stop operating. Ric updates Tom.  He explains that he has sustained irreparable damage. They have made the difficult decision to stop operating as if they continue he will die on the table.  They are transferring him to ITU, but the chances of him surviving the next few hours are slight.

Ric takes Tom to see his father and looks on as Ken slowly passes away- there is nothing more they can do. .

Ric is feeling guilty and he meets with Tom to tell him that there are other options for him and that he will be there to help. Tom doesn’t want any of Ric’s help and decides to come clean about his relationship with Ric’s son Leo. Tom explains that the night Leo died, he had supplied the drugs and injected Leo with the heroin that killed him. Ric is destroyed by this revelation and Tom knows that there’s no way back. He leaves, knowing they’ll never see each other again.

Tom is leaving when he notices he has a voicemail. He listens and it’s the message his father left for him. He was calling to apologise and to say that he wanted them to talk, for them to be honest with each other and start again. Tom leaves Holby City for the last time.
