Calen Mackenzie as Bailey Turner

FemaleFirst had the opportunity to catch-up with Neighbours star Calen Mackenzie who plays Bailey Turner about just how he got into the world of acting, hilarious moments on the Neighbours set and what to expect from his character in the months to come.

Has acting always been a passion of yours?

No, not really. I initially started taking drama classes because I was a bit of introvert and shy, and was being bullied at school so it was suggested as [a] confidence builder.

When did you decide it was a career path you wanted to go down?

It was my current role that made me realise this is what I want to do as a career.

What were your initial feelings when you first got cast in Neighbours back in 2012?

Oh wow, incredibly excited. It was quite a long casting process so when I was finally told I had the role, it was a huge moment. When I got the role I didn’t know that Bailey also came with a complete family which was a huge bonus.

What was it that drew you to the role of Bailey Turner?

My agent!

How best would you describe your character Bailey?

He definitely isn’t mainstream, he’s a bit of nerd, a bit quirky, which is what I really like about him. He is also passionate about his family and very protective of them.

You've now been with Neighbours for over 100 episodes, how is the whole experience?

Wow, it’s been 100 episodes! It has been incredible. As well as learning so much, I’ve made so many friends and I’m always meeting new people who come on the show in guest roles.

Who do you get on well with from set?

I was pretty close to Morgan (Baker) but I get along with everyone and that’s what makes it fun, because everyone is so different.

Calen Mackenzie as Bailey Turner

Are there ever any hilarious moments whilst filming you can share some details about?

It was during a scene with Tim Phillipps when he first started on the show and was getting used [to] the sets. It was at my place, the Turner house, and Tim walked around a corner as if [he] was leaving the house only [to] walk face first into the back of the set. It took [a] while for all [of] us to compose ourselves.

What should fans of Neighbours expect from Bailey in coming weeks?

Well, he has had a bit of [a] rough run with binge drinking, however, I’m pleased to say he does find another passion which is a lot safer and it could lead to romance, but I can’t say too much.

You've also played the lead role in ABC series The Time of Our Lives - what was that experience like?

I finished that role 18 months ago, however there was a short time when I was doing both roles, that was pretty crazy. My character on The Time Of Our Lives was quite tormented, very different from Bailey.

What do you enjoy to do in your spare time?

I like to play video games and catching up with friends.

What advice do you have for other youngsters who may be pursuing a role in the acting world?

You have to be persistent and also develop a thick skin because rejection is all part of it – you’re not going to get every role. And don’t do it for the celebrity because you will be disappointed.

Do you have any other projects in the pipeline you can share some details about?

No, Neighbours is my main focus for the moment.
