This year has been a big one for the small screen, and the entertainment shows no sign of slowing down. Some series are just beginning in the New Year, whilst others will come to a close in 2019. Here, we take a look at some of the biggest and best that will be gracing boxes across the globe, hoping to make as big of a splash as their predecessors!

Luther, Season 5 - BBC One - January 1, 2019 at 9pm

New Year's Day looks set to immediately entertain with the return of Idris Elba as titular detective, Luther. Despite not being seen since the third season's finale, Ruth Wilson is now going to make a comeback as killer Alice, and it looks as if she's got herself involved in some more murderous goings on!

Wunmi Mosaku also joins the cast as new recruit DS Catherine Halliday, whilst Hermione Norris jumps on board as psychiatrist Dr. Vivien Lake.

Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, Season 3 - Netflix - January 1, 2019

True Detective, Season 3 - Sky Atlantic - January 14, 2019 at 2am

Creator and executive producer Nic Pizzolatto returns for a third True Detective season which will star an all-new cast and feature an entirely unique story.

Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali leads the cast alongside Stephen Dorff and Carmen Ejogo in a narrative that follows detectives investigating a gruesome crime which involves two missing children, right in the heart of the Ozarks.

This one has been a long time coming, so we can't wait to see what Pizzolatto has brewed up for viewers! Hopefully the success is closer to that of the original season than the second...

The Umbrella Academy, Season 1 - Netflix - February 15, 2019

More superheroes, but this time, not as we would expect them. Completely dysfunctional and with the task of solving the mystery surrounding their father's death (as well as the threat of the apocalypse), The Umbrella Academy sees a ragtag group come together to save the world.

Adapted from the limited-series comic book of the same name (by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá), the show has been developed by Steve Blackman exclusively for Netflix.

American Gods, Season 2 - Amazon Prime Video - March 11, 2019

After a whole host of changes behind-the-scenes, the adaptation of Neil Gaiman's hugely-successful book American Gods will be making a return for a second season.

Ricky Whittle returns as lead character Shadow Moon alongside Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon and Pablo Schreiber as Mad Sweeney, whilst Kahyun Kim takes over the role of Media from Gillian Anderson, who quit the series after a single season.

Bryan Fuller and Michael Green exited the series as showrunners despite gaining rave reviews for the first season, leaving Gaiman in charge. Jesse Alexander was eventually announced as their replacement, but he also left the production before it wrapped up. Producing director Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner were then left in charge.

Hopefully, all of that chaos won't trickle down into the final product! There's an incredible story to be told here, and it's had a brilliant start.

Our Planet, Season 1 - Netflix - April 5, 2019

Netflix have gone and got their hands on what looks to be an incredible nature docuseries, with Sir David Attenborough as narrator. Viewers will be taken through some of the most precious natural habitats on Earth in the show, which is due to drop in early April.

We can't wait to watch some of the world's most beautiful creatures in their homes doing exactly what nature intended!

Game of Thrones, Season 8 - Sky Atlantic - April 2019

The time has finally come for HBO's sprawling fantasy adventure Game of Thrones to reach its conclusion. With just six feature-length episodes to go, we'll finally discover just who will be sat on the Iron Throne when all is said and done - if anybody at all!

The Night King and his army of White Walkers have breached The Wall and look set to rain terror down on anybody they come across. Whether or not Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and his temporary allies will be able to defeat them remains to be seen, but one thing has become certain; George R. R. Martin didn't name his novel series A Song of Ice & Fire for no reason!

Good Omens, Season 1 - Amazon Prime Video - Spring 2019

Another of Neil Gaiman's works - this time Good Omens which he co-authored with Terry Pratchett - is making its way to Amazon Prime Video in the Spring.

Black Mirror, Season 5 - Netflix - TBC 2019

We've got a feature-length movie-esque Black Mirror episode called Bandersnatch coming on Friday, December 28, but next year the series will make another return for a full season of new episodes! Exactly what we should expect is still up in the air, but we look forward to lots more troubling attempts at predicting what the future may look like due to huge technological advances.

RuPaul's Drag Race, Season 1 - BBC Three - TBC 2019

The time has come... for UK's biggest drag stars to lip sync... for... their... LIVES! Rumours surrounding a British edition of RuPaul's Drag Race have been circling for years now, but BBC Three finally confirmed a little earlier this month that they would be airing the first UK season in 2019.

Exactly who will compete hasn't been announced - as auditions are still to take place - but we do know RuPaul will be hosting alongside fan-favourite judge and Ru's best friend, Michelle Visage! Bring on the carnage...

Big Little Lies, Season 2 - Sky Atlantic - TBC 2019

Nobody expected a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed first season of Big Little Lies, mainly because the source material on which the brilliant first string of episodes is based was completely covered by the initial season. So, when writer and executive producer David E Kelley said he was open to the idea - one that was eventually confirmed - fans rejoiced.

Not much is known about the plot, but we do know Meryl Streep is involved, and Reese Witherspoon's character was seen flinging ice cream at the star as part of a new scene. Exciting!

Peaky Blinders, Season 5 - BBC One - TBC 2019

The cast and crew of Peaky Blinders have been hard at work on the fifth season for some time now, and fans will finally get to see what happens at some point in 2019! We're expecting a Spring premiere date, but don't be surprised if this one gets pushed back to a later date.

Cillian Murphy of course returns as the enigmatic Thomas Shelby, whilst Helen McCrory as Aunt Polly and Finn Cole as Michael Gray also make a comeback.

The residents of Hawkins, Indiana may think that their torment is over after Eleven's (Millie Bobby Brown) vanquishing of The Mind Flayer, but terror is about to return to their small town and put everybody to the test all over again.

Plot details are being kept tightly under wraps, but expect more tragedy, epic CGI scenes and even some laughs when Stranger Things makes its return to Netflix in 2019.
