The 'Line of Duty' actor - who plays Superintendent Ted Hastings on the hit BBC police corruption drama - will be at the helm of the broadcaster's popular panel show, while David Tennant was revealed earlier this week.

As reported by RadioTimes.com, Adrian will appear on the second episode of the new series next month.

Meanwhile, comedian Katherine Ryan and Political Editor of The Sunday Times newspaper Tim Shipman will join team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton on the programme.

Adrian, 62, has never appeared on the long-running show as a host or guest, so his episode will mark his debut.

While he has enjoyed a lengthy career, he has become a household name thanks to his role in ‘Line of Duty’ and he recently admitted he’s amazed that the show has seen him hailed as “devilishly handsome” and the “ultimate guilty crush”.

He said: "I was blindsided by that. I thought there would be a lot of things that would come off the back of this part but definitely not being a sex symbol.

“Maybe it has to do with the fact Ted’s out there; there he is in his uniform, he has all this moral authority – and I think sometimes women like a challenge.”

And Adrian says his wife, Anna Nygh, is “sanguine” about the attention.

He said: “She was an actress herself so she realises it comes with the territory … she thinks it’s quite humorous, she gets a laugh out of it.”

The ‘Hollow Crown’ actor is comfortable to have found mainstream fame later in life and admitted he was always warned that was likely to be the case.

He said: “When I was at drama school some of the teachers, who were very wise, said to me, ‘You’re going to be a great actor in your 50s. Now, you’re not malleable enough. You’re doing one thing well but you need to loosen up a bit.’

“That happens to actors. You learn more about it and hopefully you get better at it as you get older.”

'Have I Got News For You' returns with David Tennant as host on April 9 at 9.30pm, before the show is back in its normal 9pm timeslot for Adrian's episode on April 16.
