The 100-year-old former British Army officer - who raised £32 million for NHS charities last year after walking 100 laps of his garden - has tested positive for COVID-19, and the Prime Minister has wished him a "full recovery".

Boris wrote on Twitter: "My thoughts are very much with @CaptainTomMoore and his family. You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery."

'Good Morning Britain' co-hosts Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid have also sent their well wishes to Tom.

Speaking on today's (01.02.21) 'GMB', Piers said: "All our very best wishes go to Captain Sir Tom Moore and his family.

"He's such a special man, who did such a special thing. The greatest individual fundraiser we've ever had in this country.

"To Captain Tom - if you're watching, all our love and support to you.

"I had a little exchange with [his daughter] Hannah last night, and sent our very best wishes.  "She said she was able to tell Tom the message and he smiled, and he is grateful for all the messages he's getting. From all over the world."

'Britain's Got Talent' judge Amanda Holden wrote: "Goodness me. Wishing you a speedy recovery and look forward to  a cup of tea with you when it’s safe (sic)"

'Only Fools and Horses' star John Challis tweeted: "Please give my very best wishes to your wonderful father. Hurry home Sir."

Tom's daughter Hannah confirmed he was in hospital, but he is not in intensive care.

In a statement shared on social media, she wrote: "I wanted to update everybody that today (Sunday 31st January) my father was admitted to hospital.

"Over the last few weeks he was being treated for pneumonia and last week tested positive for COVID-19.

"He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing. He is being treated in a ward, although he is not in ICU.

"The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.

"We understand that everyone will be wishing him well. We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to."

Tom received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth last year following his extraordinary fundraising efforts.
