The BBC2 show - which was fronted by Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox and 'Dancing On Ice' star Darren Harriott - ran for eight episodes last year and saw independent takeaways across the UK battling it out to be crowned the best in the country.

However, The Sun newspaper's TVBiz column reports that the show won't be returning, with other cooking shows like Channel 4's 'The Great Cookbook Challenge' and ITV's 'Bad Chefs' also getting the axe recently.

A source said: "It’s a saturated market with so much competition, so it’s no surprise really that some shows find it hard to stand out.

"But it’s particularly tough for Sara and Darren’s one to be culled after just a series as it didn’t have time to grow.”

Each episode saw five takeaways from the same sector taking each other on in the show's Top Takeaway Kitchen.

The meals would then be delivered to local homes, with the households deciing on the winner.

Sara previously admitted producers had her on board as soon as they mentioned the word takeaway, and she said she was "thrilled" to be fronting the show.

She said: "When I first heard about this show they had me at takeaway! Especially in recent times, it has become something of an event in our house.

“I’m thrilled to be celebrating the takeaway and finding the very best in Britain. And if that means eating all the leftover chips and putting on half a stone, so be it.”
