The wannabe singer, 21, is concerned for his future in the singing competition after it emerged he had criticised the programme, the brunette panellist and the contestants last year during a series of hurtful jibes uploaded online.

Mason, who impressed judges with his rendition of Justin Timberlake's Senorita in last night's show (29.08.15) and received praise across the board, hit out at Cheryl last year after watching her perform on the programme.

He wrote at the time: "How is Cheryl in the music business let along a judge..." before dismissing the popular ITV show as "pointless entertainment."

The hopeful has now deleted the tweets but is terrified his opinions will jeopardise his place in the competition.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Mason is absolutely devastated that his messages, particularly the ones about Cheryl, have come to light after his first audition success."

The insider added: "When he wrote them he had no idea that he'd be standing in front of her just a year later and he is mortified about the things he said then."
