Chris Evans has said that the new-look Top Gear which he's now been confirmed to host will "definitely" feature a female co-host, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Nicky Campbell.

Asked about the possibility of a female co-host, Chris replied: "Absolutely. But not for the sake of it. I can confirm that definitely 100%."

Clare Balding, Suzi Perry and Jodie Kidd are some of the names that have already been linked to the series in recent months, and last week's TFI Friday special saw Perry spotted at the bar.

Evans added: "I want to have people who are knowledgeable about cars, people who have great energy, good timing, who are keen to do things differently.

He also said he'll be meeting up with former host James May following a recent holiday with the presenter.

"We're going to meet up today and tomorrow and talk about things and who knows what might happen there...?"

Earlier today, Evans confirmed that he had previously denied he would be involved because he didn't want to "contaminate the situation", saying he wanted both May and Richard Hammond to return.

"As a fan, I wanted Top Gear to carry on with those two and I thought that was going to happen.

"Whenever I said I categorically rule myself out of running for [Top Gear] it was because I didn't want to be a pawn in a chess game involving two of my friends - in fact, three, including Jeremy [Clarkson].

"I didn't want to be involved in bookies' odds and all that kind of stuff. That's not what the situation needed and I had to get out of that madness."
