The 54-year-old actor played cab driver Lloyd Mullaney on the ITV show from 2005 to 2015, and while he admits the programme is "very safe" to be in, he has been "too busy" to reprise his role.

He said: "I don't miss it.

"I've been too busy. It's very safe being in 'Corrie', it's a job for life. And it's not that hard.

Craig admits he only had to "work hard" on the soap for a "short while" when his alter-ego was involved in a big storyline.

He added to the Sunday Mirror newspaper: "You work hard for a short while and then you have a lot of downtime because someone else has a storyline."

Simon Gregson, who plays Lloyd's best mate Steve McDonald, recently admitted he loved shooting scenes with the 'Red Dwarf' star on the soap because he is a "fantastic comedy actor".

He said: "The thing for me, the dafter it is and the more silly it is the better a day at work it is for me. The crew get on board with it and the atmosphere is great. So Steve and Lloyd's scenes were great to do.

"Craig is a fantastic comedy actor but he would let me run with it and was happy to play the straight man and we slotted into that very easily."

Lloyd departed Weatherfield in September 2015 with his significant other Andrea Beckett (Hayley Tamaddon) after she landed a new job in Jersey, and she later gave birth to a baby girl off-screen.
