The 'Benidorm' star was taken to Aintree hospital in Liverpool where she was diagnosed with quinsy - also known as a peritonsillar abscess, a rare condition which is due to an infection behind the tonsil - and insisted she'd "never felt anything like it".

Sharing a picture of herself linked up to a cannula on Facebook, she said: "In Aintree hospital got Quincy never felt a pain like it I could swallow drink anything. (sic)"

The 60-year-old actress later thanked the doctors and nurses at the hospital for their care and assured her fans she was recovering after the procedure, and was heading to the theatre to watch country musical 'Achy Breaky Bride'.

She wrote: "To the doctors and nurses at Aintree hospital thank you for looking after me draining the abscess of my throat...

"Was a tad painful the relief afterwards out wayed the pain now am off to st Helen's for the play ackey breaky bride xxx yeeh haa. (sic)

A spokesperson for Crissy said: "Crissy was admitted to Aintree hospital last night with very bad throat problems. She was later treatment and diagnosed with Quincy and an abscess.

"Crissy is now on the mend and recovering well after receiving treatment. She would like to thank all the staff at Aintree hospital who took a lot of time looking after her."

This news comes after Crissy revealed she was diagnosed with vulva cancer in 2000.

She previously said: "When the doctor said cancer I actually looked around thinking, 'Who's he talking to?'

"And then the reason it wasn't detected is because normally women go for smear tests, but I had an hysterectomy when I was 24 and I didn't think I needed a smear test."

The 'Lady Bird' actress was forced to undergo surgery after a relapse in 2011, after previously being told she had the all-clear.
