The 46-year-old tied the knot with Joanne Mas in 2016 and now that he is set to star as an exaggerated version of himself in new BBC Two comedy 'Henpocalypse!' - which follows a hen party night out as a male-killing disease breaks out - admitted that his own pre-wedding celebrations got "very messy."

He told The Sun newspaper's TVBiz column: "My stag weekend was meant to be sophisticated. We went to Port Lympne Safari Park and stayed in a treehouse, which was an animal kingdom and we were going to go on a safari. I didn’t see many animals, in fact, it got very messy. I did see some monkeys, though.

"It's a nutty idea, basically a group of women go on a hen do and while they're on their hen do in Wales, a disease breaks out that kills all men. "

The former 'EastEbders' star - who quit his role as Mick Carter in 2022 after almost a decade on the BBC soap opera - went on to explain that in the comedy, the character of Jen (Kate O'Flynn) is left hallucinating about him and revealed that the part came about because the writer is a big fan of his.

He said: Jen is stuck lying in bed as she has got gangrene on her leg and that's why all her friends leave her. She keeps talking about Danny Dyer and dreaming about Danny Dyer and so that’s when I make an appearance. I got an email from writer Caroline Moran asking me if I wanted to be in the series, she basically wrote this part because she loves me as an actor.

"She felt that I was sort of one of the character’s fantasies, so I play myself in a dream sequence I love the version of me that she's got in her head because I'm very articulate and quite whimsical. I'm basically there to make Kate O’Flynn's character masculine.”

'Henpocalypse!' will air on BBC Two on 15 August.
