The 47-year-old TV star - who has a six-year-old son called Alfred with ex-wife Lara Stone - has admitted to suffering with crippling depression at one time in his life, but thinks fatherhood has helped him to find happiness.

Appearing on 'Bear Grylls: Mission Survive', David shared: "I have had struggles with depression in the past.

"There have been periods through my life when I've been very, very down and it's been very long lasting."

However, the 'Little Britain' star insisted he currently finds himself in the midst of a better, happier time in his life.

He said: "I'm certainly in a better place now and one great thing about becoming a parent.

"Your whole life starts revolving around them and you do stop dwelling on your own problems so much, because you don't have time to."

David also acknowledged that his depression was triggered by a variety of different factors.

Asked what led to his depression, the comedian - whose marriage to Lara lasted from 2010 until 2015 - explained: "A variety of things, end of relationships ... all kinds of things can take you to a very bleak place."

David urged anyone going through similarly dark moments in their own lives to seek professional help.

He said: "Seek help and not feel ashamed ... I did and that really, really helped."
