Dec Donnelly will reportedly go solo to present the next series of 'Britain's Got Talent' after impressing bosses with his 'Saturday Night Live' performance.

The 42-year-old presenter and his TV partner Ant McPartlin, also 42 - who has checked back into rehab after his drink-driving arrest and subsequent charge - had already filmed the audition segments, and now he looks set to take to the stage on his own for the live shows.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "After last weekend the feeling is very much that Dec should take on 'BGT' alone too - he did a brilliant job.

"The bosses at ITV loved him and want him back on screens as soon as possible, and Simon Cowell totally agrees that he's the best man for the job rather than bringing in a new face.

"It was obviously strange for viewers seeing him alone at first, but he took everything in his stride like a total pro. That's not to say people didn't miss Ant, but the overwhelming response was that Dec was fantastic solo too."

With a lot of the series already shot during the auditions, it's also thought Dec appearing solo will go some way with keeping continuity while Ant seeks treatment.

The insider added: "It also solves the major headache over continuity issues because so much of the series is already in the bag after the auditions finished."

Dec will be back at the helm in Orlando, Florida for the 'Saturday Night Takeaway' finale this weekend, and he is set to welcome both Craig David and Denise Richards to the programme.

He was joined by Stephen Merchant and Paloma Faith over the weekend, while Scarlett Moffat and Stephen Mulhern had expanded roles on the show to help fill the gap left by Ant.

He has since thanked fans for "carrying him all the way through the show".

He said: "It's been the weirdest, weirdest show. But I wanted to say a huge, huge thank you to lots of people here. Most of all I just wanted to thank you guys.

"That reception when I came down the stairs ... I wasn't sure what was going to happen. I wasn't sure how I was going to do or how you were going to react ... but you carried me all the way through the show. I couldn't have done it without you guys."
