The veteran actor first played the evil Time Lord opposite David Tennant's Doctor in 2007, and he has since taken on the role in four episode of 'Doctor Who: The War Master - Volume One'.

Now, producers Big Finish have confirmed a further three mini-series are being made, starting with 'The War Master: The Master of Callous' in December.

The series' script editor Nicholas Briggs said: "As we travel further with the Master through the Time War, there are epic implications as well as very personal stories.

"There's a distinctly dark and mystical feel to some of the episodes, but ultimately we discover that the Master laid some truly dastardly plans before it all started, and that his warped ambition knows no bounds."

Scott Handcock, producer and director of 'The War Master' series, revealed that Jacobi's enthusiasm for the project meant it was an easy decision to work on more.

He added: "Even before we finished recording 'The War Master: Only The Good', Derek had told us how much he wanted to come back, and another series of brand-new adventures for the War Master got an instant green light!"

The second box set - 'The War Master: Rage of the Time Lords' - will follow in 2019, with the trilogy being concluded in December 2019 with 'The War Master: Anti-Genesis'.

Speaking at the time of his initial return last year, Jacobi, 79, admitted he was "thrilled" that he remained in the memory of the fans.

He said: "I didn't expect to come back to it all these years later. But I was thrilled to be remembered.

"The plots in all these episodes have been very good indeed, very interesting, very dramatic, and beautifully written. The whole process has been a delight!"
