The 52-year-old master of psychological illusion has already received the "best responses" of his career to his interactive one-man live stage show 'Showman' - after bringing it to theatres across the UK - and he will now return to Channel 4, where he has had a home for more than 15 years.

He said: "Channel 4 have consistently allowed me the creative freedom to push boundaries and innovate as far as possible, so it’s a real joy to bring what I feel is my best show to date to Channel 4 audiences.

"It’s had the best response of any show I’ve done."

Derren has been "very touched" to read some of his fans' responses to his "very personal project", which centres on themes of how life’s difficulties bring us together, and living life attentively.

He added: "It’s lovely to know, and I’ve been very touched to read and hear people’s responses to it so far - it’s a very personal project and it’ll be wonderful to have it air on Channel 4, which has been my home for over two decades."

In 2020, Derren told how he "deflected" his "deep shame" about being gay with magic.

He told The Times newspaper's Saturday Review at the time: "There's the old-fashioned cliché we have of the gay man being the hairdresser or the interior decorator.

"They still resonate, though, because if you're feeling deep shame about who you are you deflect with those sort of dazzling surfaces.

"Magic is a quick route to impressing and therefore deflecting. It creates a strong aura of untouchability, which is very helpful if you're feeling awkward about the stuff inside."

'Derren Brown: Showman' will air on Channel 4 at the end of April.
