The Channel 4 show has won the Best Comedy accolade, while Lisa McGee - who created the hit TV series - has been handed the Best Writer gong.

Elsewhere, 'This Is Going to Hurt' - the BBC's medical comedy-drama series - has also won two coveted accolades.

Ben Whishaw - who is perhaps best known for playing Q in the James Bond franchise - has won the Best Actor award, while Ambika Mod, his co-star, has won the award for Best Actress.

Grant Tucker, the chair of the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, said: "Our winners always reflect the vast amount of talent in British television and the prizes are going to both programmes and individuals who were extremely popular with our audiences last year."

The Best Entertainment gong has been awarded to 'The Traitors', the reality TV show hosted by Claudia Winkleman.

'Sherwood' has been given the Best Drama award, while 'The Real Mo Farah' was named the Best Documentary Mini Series.

'Frozen Planet II' has won the award for Best Documentary, having won the same accolade back in 2012.

'I Hate Suzie Too' - which was written by Lucy Prebble and co-created with Billie Piper - has been named the Best Drama Mini Series.

In the audio awards categories, the Radio Programme of the Year prize went to 'In Dark Corners', which investigated abuse at public schools in the UK.

'The Coming Storm' - which centred on conspiracy theories in the US - has won the Best Podcast award, while Marianna Spring has won the Audio Presenter of the Year gong.

Simon O’Hagan, the chair of the audio jury, said: "Three great winners this year that have tackled some very serious subjects and that shows that radio and podcasts are especially important when it comes to investigative journalism."
