Allen Leech hopes this year's 'Downton Abbey' Christmas special will actually revolve around the Christmas period.

The ITV period drama's annual festive episode has been set during the summertime for the past two years, but Allen - who plays Tom Branson in the series - is hopeful the 2014 special will embrace the yuletide spirit after much fan demand.

He told RadioTimes.com: "There is a very large campaign going on to make sure the next 'Downton' Christmas special will have a tree, snow, presents... I hope that campaign goes well.

"We are aiming for a 'Downton' proper Christmas special ... a Christmas, Christmas special."

Last year's 'Downton Abbey' Christmas special centred around Lady Rose MacClare's (Lily James) coming out ball after entering womanhood. The entire Crawley gang - and their staff - found themselves in London for the glamorous affair, which even saw them rub shoulders with royalty.

The ITV show's first Christmas special in 2011 was its only Christmas Day episode to follow the Crawleys' festive fun. The episode famously featured Matthew Crawley's (Dan Stevens) proposal to Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery).

The fifth series of 'Downton Abbey' begins filming next month and will air later this year.
