The comedy duo are set to front 'French and Saunders: Funny Women' on Gold to celebrate the unforgettable women in comedy history from across the globe.

They said in a statement: "Are women funny...? This is the thorny age-old question we have been chewing over since both of us were two years old and to date, we still have no definitive answer. So in this programme, we explore fifty thousand or so irrefutable examples to see if we can draw any blatantly predetermined conclusions..."

The two-hour special was ordered for UKTV by Helen Nightingale, who admitted it was a "dream come true" to commission the programme.

Helen said: "I've always been a huge fan of French and Saunders, and to be able to bring them back together on Gold to celebrate the funny women who inspire them is a dream come true."

Gold channel director Gerald Casey added: "Gold viewers are absolutely passionate about comedy, so a show like this needs to have the right credentials. And who else on the planet is better placed to make it than two of our all-time comedy greats?"

Executive producer Glen Middleham admitted it was a "total joy" to listen to the comedy duo while making the programme.

He said: "It's a total joy to listen to Dawn and Jennifer discuss their craft and also that of the very many funny women who've influenced them. It's an honour to make what will be a very exciting, engaging and laugh-out-loud programme with two comedy icons."

It comes after the pair released a podcast, ‘French & Saunders: Titting About’, in October where they talk about assorted topics in their typically irreverent style, including useful tips on airport shopping and naming their top three vegetables.

Dawn said: "[It} is the best fun I’ve had without my incontinence pants on. Which, on reflection, was a mistake. Some soft furnishings were damaged in the making of this series.”

Jennifer added: "I can’t imagine anything I’d rather be doing than titting about with Dawn."
