The 13-year-old singer feels “so lucky” to be representing the UK in Armenia next month, which marks the first time the UK has taken part in the competition for 15 years.

She said in a statement: "I feel so lucky to have been given the opportunity to be a part of something so exciting".

The broadcaster revealed Freya was chosen for the performance on December 11 because of her “genuine star quality” via a process involving CBBC along with the entertainment and music division of BBC Studios.

Her song ‘Lose My Head’ - which is about friendships, moving on and leaving things in the past - was brought to life by people who have collaborated with huge international stars such as Ava Max, Pharrell Williams and rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

The UK previously participated in the competition from 2003 to 2005 while Wales - through the Welsh language broadcaster S4C - sent an entry in 2018 and 2019.

However, Freya’s foray into Junior Eurovision marks the BBC’s inaugural hand in the children’s version - where entrants must be between the ages of nine and 14 - of the competition.

The adult version will be hosted in Liverpool in 2023 after Ukraine - who snagged victory with Kalush Orchestra's track 'Stefania' - was deemed unable to hold the show due to the ongoing war and the UK came in second with Sam Ryder, who performed his track, 'Space Man'.

Patricia Hidalgo, the BBC Children and Education director said: "Freya is an amazing talent and she immediately stood out. Her voice is incredible, so we knew she would be able to showcase such a big song. She's also a very special, self-effacing young lady who will be a great ambassador for the UK."
