The 56-year-old actor will take on the role of initial lead inspector DCS Dennis Hoban in the upcoming crime drama 'The Long Shadow' - which will examine the Yorkshire Ripper's infamous killing spree of 13 women from 1975 until 1980, across the course of seven hour-long episodes - and he will be joined by David Morrissey in the part of DCS George Oldfield, who later took on the investigation.

'Inspector George Gently' star Lee Ingleby will play DCS Jim Hobson, while 'Coronation Street' legend Katherine Kelly will play murder victim Emily Jackson, with 'Line of Duty' actor Daniel Mays as her husband, Sydney Jackson, and Shaun Thomas as their son, Neil Jackson.

The rest of the main cast will be filled out by former 'Waterloo Road' actress Jill Halfpenny - who will play murder victim Doreen Hill - along with 'The Durrells' star Daisy Waterstone as her daughter Jacqueline.

The cast also includes Alexa Davies, Chloe Harris, Stephen Tompkinson, Jack Deam, Michael McElhatton, Adam Long, Ruth Madeley, Dorothy Atkinson, Rob James-Collier, Steven Waddington, Kris Hitchen and former 'Emmerdale' actress Charley Webb.

The series has been written by 'Lupin' co-creator George Kay and will be solely directed by BAFTA-winning director Lewis Arnold , with ITV commissioner Polly Hill commenting that the production is a "sensitive and brilliant" piece of drama that she is "proud" to have for the broadcaster.

She said: "George’s scripts and Lewis’ direction together with this wonderful cast have produced a sensitive and brilliant drama that we are proud to have on ITV.”

'The Long Shadow' will be broadcast on ITV and ITVX in September.
