Helen George has admitted to being surprised by the renewel

The 38-year-old actress - who plays Trixie Franklin on the BBC drama - has revealed that she and the other cast members were preparing for the show's finale when the news was announced.

She told RadioTimes.com: "We had no idea. We found out the day before it came out in the press, so it was pretty last minute. It was a surprise. We had no idea.

"All of us had been saying, 'Well, this is the last year.' We'd all been planning for the end. So it was a complete shock. And also now they're married as well, it's really interesting the next few years with what happens with Matthew and Trixie."

The first series of 'Call the Midwife' aired in 2012, and Heidi Thomas - the creator of the hit period drama - previously admitted to being amazed by the show's success.

The 60-year-old writer recalled being in "shock" when she heard that millions of people were watching the first series.

Heidi shared: "I think we were all hugely surprised by the popularity of the show. Simply because for a very long time before we started to film it people told us nobody would watch it. They used to say young women will be frightened by it, older women will be disgusted by it, men won’t watch it at all, and I used to think well nobody will watch this show.

"The very first time it went out we got eight million overnight viewers and I think we were in a sort of shock."
