The 41-year-old star - who appeared on the Channel 4 soap as caretaker Wayne 20 years ago - revealed he was left fuming when bosses wanted his character's locker to be decorated with photos of junk food.

Speaking to the New Yorker magazine, he said: "I thought that they were just really being nasty about anyone that's overweight.

"I remember saying to the guy, 'I don't know one person who would take a picture of a hot dog and a burger and stick them on the wall.' "

The 'Late Late Show' host - who went onto make his name in the likes of 'Gavin & Stacey' - hasn't been shy about criticising the programme in the past, and it's safe to say he doesn't look back fondly on the role.

Speaking in the past, he compared working on the show to being in "prison" and accused the team at the time of lacking "aspiration".

He said: "It was hell on earth. I am sure it has changed a lot now... No-one cared about making TV, they just cared about other things. It wasn't how I particularly liked to work.

"There is not a huge amount of care or love that went into the making of that show. It is a bit like a prison.

"I am sure if I ever go to prison I am in for a shock if I imagine it is like that, it wasn't that bad. There is a real lack of aspiration to making something as good as you can."
