James May isn't coming back to Top Gear at least for the time being, but it's been confirmed the presenter will now host a brand new live BBC Two motoring show.

Building Cars Live will see May team up with co-hosts Kate Humble and Ant Anstead, exploring the science behind car production from BMW's MINI plant in Oxford.

The series will consist of two 90-minute episodes and will air in the autumn, with May saying: "I can't wait to build a car. Live."

Humble adds: "To be broadcasting live from the production line of one of the world's most recognisable cars will be hugely exciting, and give us a brilliant insight into what goes into creating the vehicles we all take so much for granted."

Meanwhile, May was recently spotted presenting Top Gear without Jeremy Clarkson and with Richard Hammond in pictures released from the three's final episode together.

And new host Chris Evans has hinted that May could still join him on the revamped series, despite saying that open auditions will be held for the position by the BBC.
