It's been revealed today that Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will be returning as a motoring trio in a new television series with Amazon, after signing a brand new major deal with the corporation.

Airing for the first time in 2016, the new show will be produced by former Top Gear executive Andy Wilman, who has in the past been credited with revamping the show's format and turning it into one of the world's most successful factual television series.

This deal will now bring to a close months of speculation about the future of the three stars, following Clarkson's controversial exit from the BBC after 27 years.

The 55-year-old's contract was not renewed by BBC director general Tony Hall because Clarkson got into a "fracas" with producer Oisin Tymon, hitting him during a row about catering.

Co-presenters Hammond and May then also bowed out of the show, saying that working with Chris Evans - Clarkson's replacement - was a "non-starter".

No details have been released about the deal, but standard.co.uk is claiming an Amazon Insider said: "We have made a significant investment".

The global deal will commit the trio to three seasons of the unnamed show, with work expected to begin on the first this Autumn.

Likely to go head-to-head with the BBC's new version of Top Gear, the Amazon show will not be featuring the mysterious driver The Stig.

Jeremy Clarkson said today about the news: "I feel like I've climbed out of a bi-plane and into a spaceship."

Richard Hammond adds: "Amazon? Oh yes. I have already been there. I got bitten by a bullet ant."

And James May concluded: "We have become part of the new age of smart TV. Ironic, isn't it?"

As well as the money, the three are said to have been attracted by Amazon because of a pledge which will give them free creative rein to make the show they wish to make.

Vice president of Amazon Prime Video EU Jay Marine said today: "Customers told us they wanted to see the team back on screen, and we are excited to make that happen.

"Millions of Prime members are already enjoying our ground-breaking original shows. We can't wait to see what Jeremy, Richard, James and the team will create in what is sure to be one of the most globally anticipated shows of 2016."
