The 38-year-old comedian is returning to host the National Television Awards tonight (05.09.23) for the third year in a row, and he has weighed in on the Geordie duo's 21-year stranglehold on the category.

He told RadioTimes.com: "Ant and Dec are obviously there and they’re absolutely amazing – I feel like I’ve learnt everything from them, so long may their streak continue.

"That’s what’s wonderful about the Best Presenter category, because just being nominated feels like a really good nod.

"Because Ant and Dec have won it for so many years, just getting in on those top four or five is just an amazing thing to be thought about for."

This year, Ant and Dec are hoping to make it 22 in a row with 'The Martin Lewis Money Show' presenter Martin Lewis also in the running alongside 'The Chase' star Bradley Walsh, 'This Morning' favourite Alison Hammond and 'The Traitors' host Claudia Winkleman.

Joel is "really, really excited for Claudia", noting that the BBC reality show was "so good" and "so unexpected".

He added: "I love how theatrical it felt and it felt really different for her and she felt so perfect for that role.

"I love that she’s nominated, it’s really cool."

However, the 'Masked Singer' host insisted he couldn't "have any favourites" in this year's category.

He said: "It’s like my children, in the future. You can’t have any favourites, they’re all incredible."

Meanwhile, Joel and his wife Hannah Cooper are expecting their first child together and the baby's due date falls uncomfortably close to the NTAs.

It means show bosses have come up with a plan to make sure the glitzy event isn't left without a presenter if Joel has to make a dash to hospital.

Joel recently told The Sun newspaper: "There is a contingency. They won’t tell me who the contingency is but the best thing is everybody is there - every presenter going.

"What I would do is just give a section to everyone - you know, just get Stephen Mulhern to do one, Holly Willoughby to do the next bit, get Bradley Walsh on..."
