Katherine Ryan used to be on the poverty line

The 39-year-old comedienne stars opposite Romesh Rangathan in Sky Comedy series 'Romantic Getaway' and explained that she can relate to her character because she used to work in an office and would struggle with monthly bills before launching her career in standup.

She said: " For a long time I worked in an office like Alison's with the little cubicles and had to queue for the bus and Tube every day, doing a job that didn't inspire me. And I still ended up on the poverty line at the end of every month - so I relate to these characters. I do so because I feel gratitude and surprised that people offer me jobs in comedy."

The 'All That Glitters: Britain's Next Jewellery Star' host - who has been married to Bobby Kootstra since 2019 and has son Frederick, 19 months, and one-month old Fenna Grace with him as well as 12-year-old Violet from a previous relationship - is now "financially comfortable" for the first time but joked that she "hasn't slept" in over a year because she refuses to hire a nanny to look after her children.

She told Metro newspaper's SixtySeconds column: "I'm financially comfortable for the first time. As soon as my daughter and I bought property, I felt a lot safer. I have the freedom to have a nanny if I wanted to, but for some reason I insist on raising my own children in a very 'attachment' Montessori fashion. I haven't slept in 17 months so right now it's a bit intense!"
