The ex ‘Family Fortunes’ host revealed his significant other shed tears of happiness for her husband because the gig on the star-studded BBC Latin and ballroom competition meant he was on the up after his knee replacement.

The 69-year-old TV presenter told the Daily Mirror newspaper: “I was in the mix for 'Strictly', and then I heard from my agent I’d got it, and I called my wife and she cried – but in a good way. She didn’t cry going, ‘Don’t do it!’

“It’s a big challenge. The last few years, I’ve had challenges just come out of nowhere, like I did my first opera two years ago at the RSC, with no training. So this is such a massive opportunity as I approach 70. I thought yeah, why not?”

Les admitted that after a turn treading the boards on the West End, he would love to do something a bit more serious like a play by the Bard.

He said: “I would love to do Shakespeare.”

The ex ‘Coronation Street' star - who is competing alongside ‘EastEnders' actor Bobby Brazier, 20, ‘Rip Off Britain' host Angela Rippon, 53, and ‘Channel 4 News’ anchor Krishnan Guru-Murthy, 78, among others - confirmed that his new knee means he is he is free to take on any dance.

Les said: “I can do all the dances.”

Speaking about the op, he said: “I stayed awake for it. I thought, 'I’ll listen to what’s going on’. I could hear ‘bang, bang, bang’ – I thought somebody had put shelves up. Ten weeks later, I was rehearsing ‘Hairspray’.”
