The critically-acclaimed BBC show claimed the award for Best Drama Series, while Martin Compston won the Best Actor gong and Vicky McClure, his co-star, walked away from the virtual ceremony with the Best Actress accolade.

Jed Mercurio, the show's creator, said: "Everyone involved in 'Line Of Duty' is absolutely thrilled to be recognised in this way by the viewers and readers of TVChoice, it means an enormous amount to us and we couldn't be more grateful.

"It wouldn't be the show it is without the amazing performances of Vicky, Martin, Adrian [Dunbar] and our brilliant guest leads including Kelly Macdonald and all the other brilliant guest leads we've had.

"They're the guys who actually do it on camera so it's definitely a tribute to them."

Martin - who beat his co-star Adrian to his award - was also thrilled by his personal success.

He said: "This has put a massive smile on my face. I'm chuffed to bits.

"I want to thank my fellow nominee Adrian Dunbar and my lovely wife for always holding the fort while I'm off playing cops and robbers."

Elsewhere, 'Coronation Street' was named the Best Soap award winner.

David Neilson - who plays Roy Cropper - also won the Best Soap Actor accolade, while Sally Carman - who plays Abi Franklin in the long-running show - was named the Best Soap Actress.

Meanwhile, the Netflix series 'Bridgerton' was another of the big winners on the night.

The period drama - which has proven to be a huge hit with viewers since its launch in 2020 - was named the winner of the Best New Drama gong.

Nicola Coughlan - who played Penelope Featherington in the series - accepted the award on behalf of the cast and crew.

Speaking via a video link, Nicola said: "TV Choice Awards, thank you so much for this beautiful award, it's beautiful and very pointy - which I love.

"Thank you to our wonderful cast and amazing crew. This means so much to us and I'll proudly take this back to Regency London!'"
